The Royal Ark Mariner Degree is based on the story of Noah which closely parallels the story of creation: a cycle of creation, desolation, and re-creation, in which the Ark plays a pivotal role.
The very significant symbol is far from being merely intended to remind us of the deliverance of Noah and his family, the progenitors of the whole existing human race, from the deluge which overwhelmed the old world, and swept away the workers of iniquity, but still more to suggest to our thoughts those great truths which were typified even in Noah’s ark itself, and in the salvation accomplished by it―in addition, the Royal Ark Mariner Degree is centred on historical events.
What is
the Fraternity of Royal Ark Mariner?
The central message of the RAM is that Salvation and Trust are applicable to all of us who depend upon the Great Architect.
The legend of Noah and his family were regularly enacted throughout England in the Mystery Plays of the seventeenth century and by the middle of that century there was reputedly a Masonic Degree of “Noachites”. However, the first authentic record of the Degree of Royal Ark Mariner appears in the minutes of a meeting held in Bath in 1790.
The ritual stems from the Old Testament story of Noah’s Ark and reinforces the theme of the Creator’s covenant with the faithful and the values of the Noachide faith. It takes up the symbolism of the rainbow, which also features in the regalia of the Order, as the outward sign of this covenant; and it offers a message which underlines the essential moral qualities of ancient Freemasonry in a new way. Today’s Royal Ark Mariner ritual was developed during the 19th century though in some ways it reflects the Freemasonry of the early 18th century and before, before the Hiramic legend became the central theme of the Craft that it is today.
As in the Craft, the ceremony emphasises the virtues of wisdom, strength and beauty, here referring to the wisdom of Noah in constructing the Ark, his strength of character and the beauty of his workmanship. The Lodge is ruled by the Worshipful Commander. The Principal Officers of a Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners represent Noah, and two of his sons: Shem, and Japheth. The Lodge room is made to represent the Ark of Safety.

The Cosmopolitan RAM Lodge No. 6 has been consecrated on the 14th September 6002 A.L. in Bern
The Ancient and Honourable Fraternity of Royal Ark Mariners, known as Royal Ark Mariners, is under the jurisdiction of the National Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons of Switzerland and governed by the Grand Commander.
The Cosmopolitan RAM Lodge No. 6 is attached to Cosmopolitan MMM Lodge, shares its number and its meetings are held on the same day.
Our Regular Meetings are held 3 times a year on the 4th Thursday of February (Installation), May and October, before the MMM Meeting, in the Masonic Building of Zurich, usually in the Grand Temple.

Why Join
the Royal Ark Mariner Fraternity?
The Mariners are taught that out of chaos and catastrophe mankind can survive and that they should face adversity together, helping to look after those less fortunate than themselves.
In the ceremony of ‘elevation’ analogies are drawn between the dangers of the flood and the dangers of life. The subject matter, being taken directly from the V.S.L., is both beautiful and instructive. The teaching of the degree emphasizes the importance of family strengths and the need for each member of society to play his part to the benefit of all.
The conciseness and depth of its message combine to give it an elegance rarely surpassed elsewhere in Freemasonry. It contains within it many symbols of Freemasonry found in other degrees, which are evoked in the rich and colourful Tracing Board of the degree. A careful study of its various elements offers a deeper insight into the Masonic tradition that might have been imagined when progressing through the Craft degrees.
Further, the Degree teaches us that to those who worship the one universal God, then unto them He has promised His everlasting peace and mercy―we shall not be overwhelmed in the surging billows; we shall not be driven from our place to be the sport of winds, and to be dashed by them to destruction; but we shall weather every storm and find ourselves after all in a haven of peace and rest.
Membership of the Royal Ark Mariners is the next step for many Mark Master Masons in their Masonic journey and the only qualification for ‘elevation’ is that a Brother should already be a member of the later.
